Don Rouse

Marcus Roberts will be appearing at the Montpelier Cultural Arts Center in Laurel, Maryland, on April 23, and also conducting a lecture and workshop. Influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington, among others, pianist Roberts work is significant and interesting from the perspective of tradition and continuity in jazz. Roberts is sensitive to the harmonic progressions, rhythmic phrasing, and rhythmic compositional development of classic jazz and ragtime, and builds original compositions of extended form incorporating the musical legacy he received. -Ed.
