Join the Potomac River Jazz Club for our May concert with The Paramount Jazz Orchestra!
Get ready for Paramount Jazz! Our 10-piece jazz orchestra is coming to PRJC’s Rosensteel Hall. We have reed and brass sections (3 saxes, 2 cornets, trombone) and a rhythm section (piano, drums, tuba and banjo) for that vintage sound. Paramount plays from original stock music charts used by bands of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as our flavor of toe-tappin’ popular songs from the era.
For years, the band entertained monthly at the Potomac Grill in Rockville, and annually at the Glen Echo Folk Festival and the Baltimore Vintage Record Club. Other avenues have included Alfio’s la Trattoria restaurant, many private parties, dances and retirement communities. Currently, Paramount is feature regularly at Hank Dietle's Tavern.
You’ll hear 2-beat syncopated traditional “hot” jazz from the Prohibition era to the early swing music that preceded Big Band style in the 1940s. This 10-piece orchestra will fill Rosensteel Hall with exciting music familiar to anyone who has listened to radio’s Hot Jazz Saturday Night. So get out your spats and cloche hats. You won’t sit still at this "Speak-Easy"! Are you ready to dance to some hot jazz and early swing? See you there!

Join us for our next installment of the PRJC Jazz Talk Series featuring Hal Smith discussing Alex Hill - Renaissance Man of Jazz.
Alex Hill was a piano child prodigy whose compositions were recorded by Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Red Nichols and Louis Prima. Some of his songs became jazz standards and are still performed today. He was also a well-loved arranger, whose pieces were featured by a wide variety of orchestras, including those led by Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Whiteman, Andy Kirk and Ina Rae Hutton. |
Many recordings of the 1920s and 1930s confirm that Alex Hill was a true Renaissance Man of hot jazz: composer, arranger, bandleader, pianist and vocalist. Join Hal Smith for our May Jazz Talk to learn more!
Hal took up the drums in 1963. Inspired by hearing Ben Pollack, Nick Fatool, Wayne Jones and Fred Higuera in live performance, he has also been influenced by the records of Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton, Andrew Hilaire, Ray Bauduc, Sid Catlett, Dave Tough, Vic Berton and many others.
Hal’s resumé includes work with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, Butch Thompson Trio, New Black Eagles, Climax Jazz Band, Grand Dominion Jazz Band, Soprano Summit, Lawson-Haggart Jazz Band, South Frisco Jazz Band, Yerba Buena Stompers, Jonathan Stout’s Campus Five, the Carl Sonny Leyland Trio and more. In addition, Hal has performed with nationally recognized Swing, Western Swing, Rockabilly and Blues groups.
At present, Hal leads the El Dorado Jazz Band (Traditional New Orleans Jazz via Southern California) and the Mortonia Seven (the music of Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton). Hal also travels across the country to play engagements with Banu Gibson, Kris Tokarski, Tim Laughlin and Miss Jubilee and the Yas Yas Boys.
Hal is one of the founders of the San Diego Trad Jazz Camp for Adults. Currently he is on the faculty of the New Orleans Trad Jazz Camp, leading student ensembles, offering drum instruction and lecturing on jazz history. Recently he became a Board Member of the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society and a Band Advisor for the Bix Jazz Festival.

The Conservatory Classic Jazz Band opens and closes the music, with a Jam Session in the middle. All are welcome to sit in or just sit back and enjoy!
The Conservatory Classic Jazz Band was formed in 2003 to present the sounds of traditional jazz to Washington DC audiences. A seven-piece group, they play New Orleans style, Chicago style, small-group swing, and mainstream.
CCJB members include Dave Robinson, leader/cornet/trumpet, Brian Priebe on trombone, Gary Gregg on clarinet/sax, Dan Hall on bass, Jeff Reynolds on guitar/banjo, Brian Alpert on drums. Note: Alfio's has valet parking, street parking, and a full dinner menu available.

The Seth Kibel Quintet, featuring Flo Anito is a PRJC favorite. They'll perform a varied program of jazz, swing, and yes, a little bit of klezmer for good measure. Expect lots of trad favorites, a few rarities, as well witty, insightful, and partially-accurate historical commentary from Seth (not to mention a lot of laughs). You'll hear plenty of good music suitable for dancing, listening, drinking, and heckling, including quite a few from Seth's most recent album on Azalea City Recordings, "Clown With A Stick," released in May 2023.

The Potomac River Jazz Club (PRJC) has been bringing Traditional Jazz to the DC area for 52 years. Our monthly concerts, Trad Jazz Jams, and online Jazz Talks offer a variety of programming for everyone. Our concerts are held at Rosensteel Hall in Silver Spring, MD. It is close to the Forest Glen Metro, has ample parking, and a spacious dance floor. There is plenty of seating, and a cash bar with beverages and snacks.
